Water Facts

What follows are some of the key reasons we chose to make a difference in the clean water effort around the world.

  • There are 1.1 billion people who lack access to clean water worldwide.
  • Every day, water-related diseases kill 5,000 children - that's approximately one every 15 seconds
  • Nearly 90% of all diseases in the world are caused by unsafe drinking water
  • Women spend thousands of hours a year collecting and carrying water for their families to use. This water is usually unsafe, and the time spent collecting it is time not spent working. Therefore, the poor stay poor due to the water crisis.
  • Every year, more children die due to water-related causes than to AIDS, Malaria, and Measles combined
  • At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene
  • Almost two in every three people who need safe drinking water survive on less than $2 a day and one in three on less than $1 a day
  • An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than a typical person in a developing country slum uses in a whole day
